Job Summary:

The Laborer in the City of Cotulla Water and Wastewater Department is responsible for performing a variety of manual labor tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and operation of the city’s water and wastewater systems. This position supports the department’s mission to provide safe and reliable water services to the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer lines.
  • Dig trenches and assist in pipe laying for water and sewer mains.
  • Perform general maintenance of equipment and tools used in water and wastewater services.
  • Clean and maintain wastewater treatment facilities and water distribution systems.
  • Monitor and report leaks, blockages, or system malfunctions to supervisors.
  • Operate light construction equipment such as backhoes, pumps, and hand tools.
  • Assist in loading, unloading, and transporting materials and equipment.
  • Ensure work areas are kept clean, safe, and free of hazards.
  • Follow safety protocols and procedures at all times.
  • Assist other departments as needed or directed by supervisors.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 pounds).
  • Basic knowledge of water and wastewater systems is a plus but not required; training will be provided.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and follow directions.
  • Strong attention to detail and safety awareness.

Work Environment:

  • This position involves outdoor work and exposure to all types of weather conditions.
  • Work may involve exposure to raw sewage, chemicals, and other potentially hazardous materials (protective equipment will be provided).
  • Occasional overtime or weekend work may be required in emergencies.

Compensation:

  • Hourly wage based on experience and qualifications.
