The City of Cotulla is hosting a public meeting to engage the community in the development of the City’s Hazard Mitigation Plan. This meeting will focus on overall planning process, identifying hazards, collecting anecdotal evidence of hazards, and introducing the community survey. The meeting will be at the Alexander Convention Center on Tuesday, May 16th at 6:00 pm.

What is a hazard mitigation plan?

Defined as sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from hazards. A hazard mitigation plan establishes the framework for a community to take sustained action to mitigate their hazard risk. It identifies existing community personnel, resources, policies, and programs available to accomplish mitigation.

Why is hazard mitigation important?

  2. Creates safer, more disaster-resilient communities

  3. Communities with approved HMP may apply for FEMA mitigation grants

What are the goals?

  1. Heighten public awareness

  2. Protect public health and safety

  3. Protect existing and new property

  4. Maximize insurance coverage to provide financial protection against hazards
